It’s a well-known fact that many children are unhappy when they’re told they need eyeglasses. Kids in grades 1 through 8 can be especially displeased because their peers may say their new specs are unattractive, awkward or dorky. And the wearers may assume that they’re uncomfortable and inconvenient.
At the office of Southeast Eye Group, our optometrists and other skilled professionals are experts at helping our customers choose the eyeglasses and contact lenses that are right for them. We will scrupulously evaluate the health of your eyes and patiently answer all of your questions. Your care and comfort are our top priorities.
Follow these suggestions to pick out the best eyeglasses for your child and help him (or her) want to wear them.
Ensure they fit well. The frames should feel comfortable on his ears and nose. Before making a final decision, take into account how heavy the glasses will be after the lenses (especially if they’re glass) are in. Weighty eyeglasses will turn a kid right off.
Ensure your child’s prescription is correct. Something may be off if he looks over the tops of his glasses or can’t see clearly.
Start slowly. If your child isn’t crazy about wearing his eyeglasses, have him start off wearing them for short periods. Donning them in the morning slowly increases how long he’ll keep them on.
Establish a schedule. Incorporate the glasses into his daily routine. Say it would benefit him to put them on in the morning and remove them before bedtime.
Commend his effort. Every time he wears his glasses, give him an encouraging shout-out.
Point out the positives. Explain the benefits of his new glasses, such as he’ll see clearly, that his squinting days are over and they give him a polished, distinguished look.
